Awarded by the Western Publishing Association (WPA), the MAGGIE Awards honor media and publishing professionals who exhibit dedication and excellence within the field. Featuring several different categories, the awards honor professionals in both print and digital mediums. Smart Meetings’ monthly publications help meeting professionals plan, coordinate, and host high-quality corporate events. Because of its dedication to setting the standards for the meeting industry, Smart Meetings won a MAGGIE Award in 2013 for Best Feature Article and was a finalist in four additional categories, including Best Interview or Profile/Trade, Best Editorial Layout and Best Single Editorial Illustration/Trade and Most Improved Publication/Trade, following a newly refreshed design last year.

As one of the WPA’s many tools and resources to improve and promote creativity and excellence within the publishing field, the MAGGIE Awards have honored achievements for more than 60 years. Each year, the WPA hosts the Annual MAGGIE Awards Banquet, one of the West’s most recognizable publishing events. The WPA also offers MAGGIE college student categories. Winners within these categories receive scholarships and grants in addition to their recognition at the MAGGIE Awards Banquet in the spring. Through its continued dedication to the advancement of the media publishing industry, the WPA provides the industry with a recognizable standard of excellence.

Meeting planners face many unique job challenges. For many planners, the best way to stay connected to trends and venues is to attend educational meetings themselves. One great source for events tailored to the specific needs of professional event planners is Bright Business Media, LLC, publisher of Smart Meetings magazine and host of several Smart Events throughout the year.

The company’s Smart Events build on the concepts presented in Smart Meetings by letting professionals learn more about their trade in an interpersonal setting. At one-day and three-day Smart Events, planners can network with peers, meet with venue representatives, and attend education settings. In addition, the company offers Smart Fams, which are exclusive opportunities for planners to gain in-depth experience at a particular venue.

While planners focus on managing events for others, they should not neglect the value of attending career-focused events themselves. By doing so, meeting planners can gain new insights to help them better manage event logistics and learn about cutting-edge themes and activities to create compelling programs.
Since 1987, the International Special Events Society (ISES) has used educational programs to improve performance among meeting and event professionals. They show a strong desire to continue the advancement of the special events field through communication and collaborative efforts. The ISES’ awards, regular events, and learning opportunities provide members with the chance to expand their knowledge and improve their quality of work. With the continued support of its members, ISES promotes and builds creativity, teamwork, and inspiration among professionals.
As one of the most widely read publications in the meetings industry, Smart Meetings magazine serves professionals in the Caribbean and North American regions. In recognition of its work, Smart Meetings earned the prestigious MAGGIE Award from the Western Publishing Association in 2013 in the category of Best Feature Article and in 2011 for Best Regularly Featured Column. The organization was also nominated in 2012 in several categories, including Best Overall Publication Design, Best Editorial Layout, and Best Overall Publication.

Presented by the Western Publishing Association (WPA), the MAGGIE Awards celebrate excellence among professionals in the media and publishing industries. At the annual MAGGIE Awards banquet, held each year in the spring, publishing professionals in 24 states convene to acknowledge nominees in more than 100 categories, including design, editorial, and promotions and events. In its 63rd year, the 2014 MAGGIE Awards will be held May 2, 2014, at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel in Los Angeles.

Established in 1951 as the Western Society of Business Publications, the name of the organization was officially changed to the Western Publishing Association in 2008 to reflect the evolution of the publishing industry. Today, the MAGGIE Awards are recognized as one of the most prominent awards in publishing in the western half of the country.
